Toy Safety Certification Program® Announces First Toy Product Certifications

New York, NY | November 18, 2009 – The Toy Industry Association (TIA) announced today the first products to be certified under the newly launched Toy Safety Certification Program® (TSCP), a comprehensive initiative to help assure compliance with the federal Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) and enhance the safety of toys sold in the United States.    The TSCP was launched on October 1, 2009.

Push, Pull and Ride, a combination push walker and stroller, ride-on and pull wagon produced by Radio Flyer, Inc. was the first product to receive TSCP certification.

“The TSCP provides a framework for the across-the-board recognition we need and want for our products,” said Robert Pasin, Chief Wagon Officer, Radio Flyer.  “We are very pleased to be part of an industry-initiated process which will be recognized by regulators, retailers and eventually consumers.”

Five products from Sassy, Inc. – Flip & Grip 2 Pack, Sensation Station, Hello Baby! Phone, Carrier Mirror and Fascination Station – have been certified.

The Magic Card Game Assortment and Tripoley Diamond Edition, both produced by Cadaco, Inc. (a division of Rapid Displays, Inc.) rounds out the first set of certified products.

TSCP provides a “Reasonable Testing Program” for CPSIA compliance. TSCP certification signifies that manufacturers have performed an analysis of their toy designs to identify and correct safety issues, assessed factory process controls, and performed the prescribed safety tests on product samples using accredited laboratories.  Certificates are available for review and use by U.S. regulatory authorities as required by federal law, and also by retailers and – eventually – consumers.

“Importantly, TSCP will help to eliminate redundant testing and illustrate the industry’s commitment to upholding the current standards set forth in the CPSIA,” added Pasin.

Experts involved in the program estimate that TSCP participation costs will be recouped with a single saved test report or the avoidance of one delayed shipment.
