Toy Industry Association's Statement on Lead in Toys
November 18, 2009
With the safety of children as our number one priority, the Toy
Industry Association (TIA) helped establish the federal standards for
lead in children’s products over 30 years ago. This
commitment carries through current industry actions to implement the
additional lead restrictions that are now contained within the Consumer
Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).
A massive testing and inspection effort conducted across the toy
industry over the past two years is further assuring the safety of toy
products on store shelves.* Strict restrictions and increased
enforcement have made a significant difference.
In 2009, under increased testing and enforcement, recalls of toys for
lead content are down 84%, demonstrating the widespread compliance under
the new, tougher requirements and evidence that industry efforts are
paying off. In their own research, other independent organizations
have found similar results. Consumers should be assured by these
efforts.
Safety is the toy industry’s top priority and we will not stop
in our efforts to assure the ongoing development, promulgation and
implementation of strict safety requirements for
toys.
*Note: Products such as children’s jewelry, apparel,
shoes, backpacks or other children’s accessories are not
considered toys. These products are produced by other
industries.
