02/02/2010 | Washington State Issues Pilot Chemicals Regulations Concerning Children’s Products
On January 28th, the Washington State Department of Ecology (DoE) released a draft proposed rule (pilot) of regulations for reporting “chemicals of concern” in children’s products under the Children’s Safe Products Act (CSPA) that passed in 2008. In this release was a list of 66 suspected “chemicals of concern” in children’s products and a pilot process for reporting the use of these chemicals in products to the Department.
02/01/2010 | U.S. Toy Industry Sales Generate $21.47 Billion In 2009
According to The NPD Group, U.S. retail sales of toys generated $21.47 billion in 2009 compared to $21.65 billion in 2008, a decline of under 1 percent. In contrast to fourth quarter (Oct. - Dec.) 2008, Q4 2009 sales reveal that, while revenues were flat due to heavy promotional activity at retail, unit sales were up 4 percent vs. Q4’08.
01/26/2010 | Noting Stringent Requirements in Current Toy Safety System, TIA Forms Task Group to Consider Possible Enhancements to National Safety Standards
Toys sold in the U.S. have long been prohibited from containing substances that can result in toxic or harmful exposure to children, including cadmium and other heavy metals. Reporting to the TIA Safety Standards Technical Committee (SSTC), a new task group will consider whether established limits and test methods under ASTM F963/CPSIA should be updated to further strengthen the current U.S. safety system.
