Toys“R”Us Launches Program Encouraging Parents to be Vigilant about Product Safety

Toys“R”Us launched a national Product Safety Vigilance Program on August 25th to provide parents and caregivers with product information to help them make safe choices for their children. The program includes “Eight Steps to Keep Kids Safe,” a checklist to help parents stay informed about product recalls, and a “Product Record List” to assist parents in tracking purchases and gifts.

“Aspirational” toys are a new category of products that empower kids by encouraging them to think and play in ways that positively influence their emotional and intellectual development. Toy Industry Foundation Names Kids in Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) as New Toy Bank Partner

The Toy Industry Foundation (TIF) announced today that it will strengthen its partnership with Kids In Distressed Situations (K.I.D.S.) by assigning the New York City-based not-for-profit organization responsibility for logistics and related administrative support of the TIF’s signature program, The Toy Bank. K.I.D.S. will assume its new role effective September 1, 2010.

CPSC Issues Final Interpretive Rule on the Term “Children’s Product”
August 31, 2010
The CPSC has published a proposed revision to its Final Interpretive Rule defining “Children’s Product” under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). The Rule, along with comments received in response to this summer’s public comment period, were published August 25th and will be considered for final approval by the CPSC Commissioners on September 9, 2010.

Fall Toy Preview to Kick Off Long-Lead Toy Buying Season for Holiday 2011

More than 600 buyers representing 250 unique long lead and mass market retail outlets are preparing to converge in Dallas, Texas this October to place their orders for 2011 holiday toys at the Toy Industry Association’s (TIA) Fall Toy Preview. The annual by-appointment-only event provides toy buyers from the mass retail sector a central marketplace in which to meet one-on-one with their vendors nearly a year in advance of in-store delivery.

ANSI to Host Activities During World Standards Week 2010; Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to Deliver Keynote Address on Anti-Counterfeiting

During its annual series of World Standards Week events next month, the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) will host a conference on Anti-Counterfeiting where Secretary of the U.S. Department of Commerce Gary Locke will provide the keynote address. TIA will be participating in a number of activities that week, including the awards banquet honoring the APEC Toy Safety Initiative and exhibition on Capitol Hill featuring toys for children with special needs.

TIA to Launch Revision of U.S. Safety Standard for Tricycles; Members Invited for Review Group

The Toy Industry Association (TIA) issued today a call for experts to participate in the review group that will consider an update of ANSI Z315.1-2006, American National Standard for Tricycles – Safety Requirements. Responses are requested no later than Friday, October 8, 2010.

American Plastic Toy Hosts CPSC Commissioner and Staff for Toy Company Tour

A meeting and toy manufacturing plant tour for Consumer Product Safety Commissioner (CPSC) Robert Adler and two members of the Commissioner’s staff was hosted last week by John Gessert, CEO of American Plastic Toy Company and a member of the TIA Executive Committee. The presentation and plant tour “was very helpful” in providing the CPSC executives with insight into how implementation of the CPSIA is affecting small- and medium-sized toy manufacturers.

Delays in Asian Import Supply Chain Challenge Logistics Managers

U.S. importers are reporting growing delays in getting goods out of Asia, pushing logistics managers to find creative ways to get shipments moving and raising worries about potential problems for this year's peak season. The concerns come as retailers, wary of the fragile recovery, try to keep inventories lean and costs down but find that spending to avoid congestion or expedite movement is quickly proving to be a necessity.

TIA Opposes BPA Listing and Reporting in Maine

On August 19th, the Toy Industry Association (TIA) testified in Augusta, Maine against a regulation proposed by the Maine Board of Environmental Protection that would designate Bisphenol-A (BPA) as a “priority chemical” and require reporting for toys and other children’s products that contain BPA. The regulation would also ban BPA from baby bottles and “sippy” cups.

TIA will once again serve as a contributing sponsor of the Annual Chicago Toy and Game Fair (ChiTAG) that will be held at the city's famous Navy Pier on November 20-21, 2010. All TIA members will receive a 10% discount on exhibit space, conference registration fees, and tickets for the annual Toy and Game Inventor Awards dinner.
