ICPHSO Annual Meeting Brings Together Global Regulators,
Retailers, Manufacturers and More
March 3, 2012 | The International Consumer
Product Health and Safety Organization (ICPHSO) held
its 19th Annual Meeting and Training Symposium in
Orlando, Florida from February 28 to March 2, 2012.
Toy Industry Association (TIA) staff was present at the
meeting, which drew regulators, retailers, manufacturers, consumers,
standards and testing organizations, and more from around the world who
gathered to learn about updates in the field of consumer product safety
and exchange information.
On Consumer Product Safety Commission Day (March 1), CPSC
Chairman Inez Tenenbaum delivered a keynote address to more than 600
consumer product safety professionals, during which she commended ASTM
International, the toy industry, TIA and TIA vice president of standards
and government affairs Joan Lawrence, who chairs the ASTM Subcommittee
F15.22 on Toy Safety, for completion of the ASTM F963-11 toy safety
standard in December 2011. CPSC Commissioners unanimously approved the
ASTM F963-2011 revision at a meeting last month, which will make the
revised edition a mandatory consumer product safety rule in June 2012
under the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA).
“Joan Lawrence did a very good job of leading [Subcommittee
F15.22 on Toy Safety] and incorporating the viewpoints of a variety of
stakeholders,” stated Chairman Tenenbaum.
Tenenbaum also thanked TIA and its members and the Fashion Jewelry
and Accessories Trade Association for supporting ASTM voluntary
standards for cadmium and other toxic metals in surface coatings and
substrates of children’s jewelry and toys.
The four-day event included Manufacturers Day (Feb. 28),
Workshop Day (Feb. 29) and Closing General Session
(March 2), covering a wide range of topics spanning global product
safety strategies and education; risk management; global regulatory
outlooks; and recalls. TIA also hosted a booth at the Symposium
communicating the importance of safe and fun play.
“TIA shares ICPHSO’s commitment to protect consumers by
enhancing the safety of products manufactured and sold in the global
marketplace,” said Lawrence, who is a member of ICPSHO’s
Board of Directors. “We were pleased to participate in this
year’s conference, where we promoted the toy industry’s role
in ensuring toy safety.”
Created in 1993, ICPHSO is a non-profit organization dedicated to
providing forums for the exchange of ideas and information on health and
safety issues related to consumer products manufacturers and marketed in
the global marketplace. TIA was a founding member of the organization;
along with Lawrence, TIA SVP of technical affairs Al Kaufman sits on the
Board of Directors.
