2013 Summer Toy Drive Breaks Donation Record
September 10, 2013 | The Toy Industry Foundation’s Summer Toy Drive continued its record-breaking streak this year, collecting more than 896,000 toys and games to bring the magic of play to children in need across the nation.
Thanks to the generous donations from 92 unique toy companies, TIF’s Toy Bank received more than 4 times as many toys than last summer. This year’s contributions — valued at more than $4.5 million — helped to bring smiles to hundreds of thousands of deserving children.
Summertime toy distributions kicked off on June 20th with a wild safari-themed giveaway at the Ronald McDonald House in New York City, bringing an evening of play to pediatric cancer patients and their families.
The season’s toy giveaways continued with various events hosted by Play Comforts, TIF’s program for military families in partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of America Military Services. More than a dozen U.S. military bases — including Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard installations — received toys throughout the summer months.
In July, TIF and partner CASA for Children held events in New Jersey and Indiana for children in foster care, and on August 1st, TIF celebrated The Toy Bank’s 10th anniversary with the first-ever 50 state toy giveaway, Toys Across America. With the help of 68 charities and logistics partner Kids in Distressed Situations, TIF distributed toys and games to underserved children in all 50 states on a single day.
The Summer Toy Drive also helped to provide toys and games for children and their families affected by the devastating May tornado in Oklahoma, as well as for back-to-school initiatives and other children’s events.
“The 2013 Summer Toy Drive was a wonderful success in our mission to bring joy, comfort and learning to children through play,” said Foundation Coordinator Melissa Sorvillo. “We are so thankful to each and every company that generously donated to ensure that hundreds of thousands of children in need had fun this summer!”
Of the 92 Summer Toy Drive participants, 17 were first-time contributors to The Toy Bank, including:
