Licensed Toys Based on Blockbusters – Summer 2013 Update

June 4, 2013 | Each summer, a brand new batch of licensed toys and games with tie-ins to upcoming movies hit the marketplace, and 2013 is no exception.

“Licensed toys bring blockbuster movies into the playroom, allowing kids to relive their favorite movie moments, imagine future storylines and emulate superheroes long after they’ve left the theatre,” said Toy Industry Association (TIA) trends specialist, Adrienne Appell. “This year, families have many options when selecting fun and engaging toys associated with popular movies, and there’s even more excitement on the horizon for 2014.”

TIA has been tracking on its ToyInfo.org website many of the family-friendly movies that have toy and game tie-ins. The following are a few examples of this summer’s hottest movies and related product, and a sneak peek at what’s in store for next year:

Iron Man 3 (May 2013)
Released in early May, Iron Man 3 was a box office blow-out. Role-play toys related to the popular movie include:

  • Iron Man: Malibu Mansion Attack, Iron Man: Extremis Sea Port Battle, and Iron Man vs. The Mandarin: Ultimate Showdown (LEGO Systems, Inc.)
  • Iron Man ARC FX Hero Mask, the Iron Man Motorized Arc FX Gauntlet, and the Iron Man Motorized Battle Charger Vehicle (Hasbro)
  • Pop! Marvel Iron Man Vinyl Bobble (Funko-Nodniks!)
  • 42 inch Iron Man Bop Bag (Big Time Toys)

Monsters University (June 2013) and Despicable Me 2 (July 2013)
While these animated feature films lack the aspirational storylines of traditional action movies, plush, figures and games based on Monsters University and Despicable Me 2 will engage younger children who are enamored with the lovable characters. Examples of toys from both movies include:

  • Monsters University My Scare Pal Plush characters and Shake & Scare Plush characters (Spin Master)
  • Imaginext Disney Pixar Monsters University Sulley & Squishy  figures and Scare Factory play set (Fisher-Price)
  • Despicable Me 2 Posable Figures (Thinkway Toys)
  • Monopoly Despicable Me 2 Game (Hasbro)

Planes (August 2013)
If the success of Disney’s Cars franchise is any indication, Planes is destined to be a hit – both at the box office and in the toy and game aisle. Examples of toys that will bring the movie to life for young fans include:

  • Diecast Disney Planes and Pilot Pals Remote Control planes (Mattel)
  • Shake and Go characters (Fisher-Price)
  • Planes Plush Line (Just Play)

2014 Movies
Experts predict that 2014 will be the strongest year in recent history for toys tied to movies. The LEGO Movie (Feb. 2014), Amazing Spiderman (May 2014), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (June 2014), Jurassic Park 4 (June 2014) and Transformers 4 (June 2014), among many more, will bring a surge of engaging movie-related toys to market.

These are just a few examples of the many toys and games associated with upcoming blockbusters. For more information, visit the Movie Section of TIA’s ToyInfo.org website, which will be updated with toy lists in the coming weeks to coincide with film release dates.
