TIA Alerts Members of Impending Effective Date for Chemical Requirements in Europe

April 5, 2013 | In a letter sent today, the Toy Industry Association (TIA) reminded manufacturer members of the impending effective date for certain specific chemical requirements contained within the revised European Union Toy Safety Directive (TSD). The new chemical requirements will come into force on July 20, 2013.

The July 2013 effective date is in addition to the TSD’s general toy safety requirements that previously went into effect in July 2011.

“We recommend that all U.S. toy companies selling in Europe begin working towards compliance now,” stated TIA President Carter Keithley in the letter. “Experience has proven that meeting the new requirements will be a lengthy and complex process, and it will take considerable time to gather the needed information from suppliers.”

TIA anticipates that enforcement of the TSD requirements will likely increase with the upcoming effective date. Members have been provided with a summary of the new requirements, as well as sources of assistance to help assure compliance. Requests for additional information may be directed to toysafety@toyassociation.org.

As previously reported, the TSD was officially implemented across each EU state in January 2011, with the intention of strengthening the EU’s safety criteria for all domestically produced and imported toys – defined as “products that are designed or intended, whether or not exclusively, for use in play by children under 14 years of age.”
