TOTY 2014: Nominate Toys, Games and Properties through Oct. 11
September 3, 2013 | The Toy Industry Association (TIA) is now accepting toy, game and property submissions across 12 categories for the 2014 Toy of the Year Awards. The nomination period will close at 5 p.m. (Pacific) on Friday, October 11, 2013. Finalists will be unveiled on November 25th; winners will be announced at the Toy of the Year Awards ceremony in February 2014.
“TOTY is a magical event that brings the entire toy industry together to celebrate the cream of the crop in playthings for kids of all ages,” said Stacy Leistner, TIA vice president of strategic communications. “We encourage everyone to participate. There are so many fantastic toys, games and properties that are already in the marketplace or preparing for their fourth quarter debut … I know it will be a challenge for our Nominating Committees to narrow down the entries to select this year’s finalists!”
Toy companies, inventors, retailers and others are invited to nominate contenders; all submissions should include a brief (50 word) description plus a statement (up to 300 words) explaining why the product or property is deserving of recognition on the TOTY Awards ballot. Products must have been introduced to the marketplace within the last two years and must be available at retail in the U.S. on or before November 25, 2013. Each submission is $75 for TIA members and $125 for TIA non-members.
Nomination committees comprised of up to 15 experts, including journalists, academics, retailers, and other toy experts will select which of the hundreds of nominees will be chosen as finalists. They will consider each product’s creativity, originality and innovation; design and promotion; excellence of product; and marketplace acceptance.
On November 25th, the finalists will be unveiled and five ballots will launch – for Consumers, Retailers (one each for mass and specialty), Media, and TIA members – which will each be weighted and used to determine the TOTY 2014 winners. At that time, public voting will open at ToyAwards.org through mid-January 2014.
One winner in each category – as well as the overall “Toy of the Year” and the “People’s Choice Award” (based solely on votes from the general public) – will be announced at the Toy of the Year awards ceremony on February 15, 2014 at the modern, stunning Grand Hyatt Hotel. This year’s event will be like never before, kicking off Toy Fair week with a celebration of the “Oscars” of the toy industry, honoring the most outstanding new toy products to hit the marketplace, saluting the industry icons being inducted into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame, and supporting the inspiring work of the Toy Industry Foundation.
