House and Senate Set to Vote on TSCA Reform
May 24, 2016 | Both houses of Congress will vote on the compromise bill of the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) shortly, with the U.S. House of Representatives scheduled to vote today and the Senate later this week. Upon its passage, the bill will be sent to President Obama to be signed in to law.
The Toy Industry Association (TIA) issued a press release last week regarding the compromise both houses had reached on the outdated chemical law.
“We continue to seek a federal uniform policy for regulating chemicals across all 50 states that keeps American children and families safe while fostering innovation,” stated TIA President & CEO Steve Pasierb.
TSCA reform will strengthen the federal chemical regulatory system and is a top policy priority for the toy industry. TIA has been advocating for several years for a stronger federal chemical regulatory system so that states and counties will not feel it necessary to act in the absence of stricter federal oversight. Once President Obama signs the bill into law, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will begin the process of prioritizing chemicals and taking necessary steps to review them.
TIA will stay engaged with the EPA during this process to find opportunities to participate in the development of future rules and regulations that could impact the toy industry.
