CPSC Commissioner Marietta Robinson: ‘U.S. Children Play with the Safest Toys in the World’

The honorable commissioner keynotes TIA’s “Toy Safety & Compliance Update” at Toy Fair

February 20, 2017 | Speaking today at a toy safety and compliance seminar hosted by the Toy Industry Association (TIA), Marietta Robinson, commissioner at the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), said that “U.S. children play with the safest toys in the world.”

Commissioner Robinson made the remarks during a keynote address during TIA’s “Toy Safety & Compliance Update,” attended by hundreds of manufacturers, retailers, toy inventors, testing labs, and other attendees of the 114^th North American International Toy Fair.

Robinson said that it’s “heartening” to see how toy companies do so much to protect consumers, and lauded the strong safety standards in place for U.S. toys, especially as “consumer protections across the board are being indiscriminately attacked.”

 

Going forward, Robinson said that the CPSC will continue to look to relieve third-party testing burdens while assuring compliance. The agency will also focus on ensuring that sensors (such as those being used in wearable technology) and batteries (specifically lithium ion batteries) remain safe for use children’s products.

Led by TIA’s external affairs team, the seminar provided industry professionals with news and developments related to toy safety laws and regulations in the U.S. and abroad.

Additional topics covered by TIA staff included: the future of toy regulations under the new administration, changes made to the recently updated Toy Safety Standard ASTM F963-16, tips from CPSC Small Business Ombudsman Shelby Mathis, and implementation guidelines for the reformed Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), as well as an update on state legislative and regulatory activity and international trade issues.
