Walmart Issues Open Call for “Made in the USA” Products

April 25, 2017 | Toymakers interested in pitching their products to Walmart will get their chance at the retail chain’s fourth “Open Call” event, taking place at the company’s headquarters in Bentonville, AR on June 28.

“Investing in American Jobs” is the event theme, with Walmart looking to buy all types of products that were made in the U.S. – from food to toys to apparel – from small U.S. manufacturers (both current and potential new suppliers). Manufacturers will have the chance to pitch their products to get on the shelves at Walmart stores, Sam’s Club locations, and/or on Walmart.com. Manufacturers who do not make the cut will receive helpful feedback on their products from Walmart buyers.

“We’re looking for exciting new products that are shelf-ready, have a UPC code, and are made in the U.S.,” Walmart spokesperson Scott Markley told The Toy Association. “We fully expect to make some deals during Open Call, and some will find out on the spot.”

For those who do not get a deal with Walmart, “the goal is for suppliers to leave Open Call better for having attended,” he adds.

Walmart’s Open Call event will include:

  • An update from Walmart leadership on the company’s progress
  • Product pitch meetings with buyers
  • Customer insights on Walmart shoppers
  • Supplier Academy learning sessions
  • A closing session and network reception

In January 2013, the company announced it would help boost job creation and U.S. manufacturing through buying an additional $250 billion in products that support American jobs over 10 years. It’s estimated that 1 million new U.S. jobs will be created through this initiative, Walmart said, citing data from Boston Consulting Group.

Interested parties have until May 18 to apply for a meeting with a Walmart buyer.
