Safe Kids Day Celebrated Through Mother’s Day

April 25, 2016 | With spring in full effect and summer on its way, events are being held from coast to coast in an effort to promote child safety awareness. One of the largest celebrations is Safe Kids Day, which is observed on various dates starting in April through May 8, in various locations.

Organized by Safe Kids Worldwide, Safe Kids Day aims to raise awareness about childhood injury prevention via social media and through more than 220 local events held at parks, fire stations, schools and other businesses in 40 states. Some of the fun programs include a helmet distribution event and bike rodeo in North Carolina and a “safety safari” at the Oregon Zoo.

The campaign kicks off with the promotion of a new program called My High 5 which encourages families to make a commitment to getting educated on safety concerns and provides tips for keeping children safe at home, at play or on the road.

The Safe Kids Day national celebration hosted its signature event with food, entertainment, games (and some celebrities) at Smashbox Studios in Culver City, California on April 24. Celebrities, athletes and actors appeared and took to social media to help spread toy safety messaging and use the events to educate the public on ways to prevent unintentional injuries.

Joan Lawrence, known as the “Toy Safety Mom” and the Toy Industry Association's (TIA) SVP, Standards and Regulatory Affairs, said spring is an optimal time for these events, since warm weather naturally brings new activities and more outdoor fun for families.

“It’s a great time for families to be reminded about safety,” Lawrence noted. “The local events hosted by Safe Kids continue the dialogue among parents, caregivers, families and educators about ways to prevent major injuries,” Lawrence said. She added that PlaySafe.org should be a primary resource for families as they prepare family fun this summer.
