MARKETING 'GREEN' TOYS: A REVIEW OF THE NEW FTC GREEN GUIDES AND THEIR IMPACT ON THE TOY INDUSTRY

OBJECTIVE:

The webinar provided participants with a better understanding of how the revised Green Guides affect our industry.

The Toy Industry Association (TIA) invited experts from the law firm of Keller and Heckman LLP to review the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) recent revisions to the Guides for the Use of Environmental Marketing Claims (Green Guides) and discuss implications for the toy industry.

All toy industry stakeholders, recommended for those who work on toy marketing and advertising initiatives.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

On October 1, 2012, the FTC finalized its much-anticipated revisions to the Green Guides after an extended review period that encompassed multiple public workshops and multiple requests for comments.  The final Guides reflect a wide range of public input based on hundreds of consumer and industry comments gathered over the last five years, as well as information discussed at several FTC workshops and consumer perception data developed by the FTC or contributed by commenter’s.

  • Recycled content claims

  • Degradable claims

The webinar discusses the FTC’s new guidance on:

  • “Free of” claims
  • Non-Toxic claims

  • Renewable Energy claims
  • Carbon Offset claims

The webinar also highlights claims that the FTC declined to address, including “sustainability” claims.

She is a Vice Chair of the ICC Marketing and Advertising Commission, and chairs the Commission’s Working Group on Sustainability, where she spearheaded development of the ICC's Framework Guides on Environmental Marketing Claims.  She has represented the ICC at international intergovernmental meetings discussing environmental marketing, including meetings of the OECD and UNEP, and is a frequent speaker on the topic of green advertising.
