Meet the Next Class of Top Toy Designers

December 17, 2019 | Toy Association member companies are invited to participate in The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT)’s Toy Design Department’s 2020 Summer Internship Program.

Working in collaboration with The Toy Association and its members, the FIT Toy Design Summer 2020 Internship Program, led by department head Judy Ellis and her team, introduces new classes of designers to companies across the toy industry.

Toy Association member companies are invited to participate in portfolio reviews by appointment only from Wednesday, February 19 through Wednesday, February 26, held in conjunction with 2020 Toy Fair New York.

Students can provide the following services to companies:

  • rendering presentation boards and exploded views for costing
  • 3-D modeling, sculpting, breadboards
  • conceptualizing ideas
  • communicating with manufacturers
  • research and development
  • sketching and storyboarding
  • computer-aided drafting
  • preparing sales presentations
  • computer proficiency
  • styling

“FIT takes a personal approach to its internship program, working to match the interests and abilities of its students with the specific needs of a company,” said Ellis. “I look forward to speaking directly to gain a clear understanding of your product line and corporate profile to select appropriate candidates whose talents and skills are best suited to meet your specific needs.”

Many companies have gone on to employ those same students upon graduation and incorporate their works into company lines. Past participating companies have included: Commonwealth, Fisher-Price, Faber-Castell/Creativity for Kids, Gund, Hasbro, K’NEX, Manhattan Toy, Mattel, MEGA Brands, Nickelodeon, KIDdesigns, SRM Idea Lab, Little Tykes, Alex Brands, Jazwares, and Wicked Cool Toys. Companies sponsoring interns have also shared their experiences with FIT students in testimonials.
