Your Voice Matters: Join The Toy Association™'s State Government Affairs Committee
February 5, 2024 | With the 2024 legislative session now underway, The Toy Association™ invites members to join its State Government Affairs Committee (SGAC) and actively engage in critical issues impacting the toy industry. The Association’s Global Government & Regulatory Affairs team is already diligently tracking nearly 450 bills across 39 states.
Legislation in focus includes 126 chemical and material regulation bills, 125 privacy and children’s online safety bills, and 67 bills related to packaging and extended producer responsibility (EPR). Notably, several states, including Washington, New York, and New Jersey, are actively pursuing single-use plastic and packaging EPR programs, reflecting a growing commitment to environmental responsibility. Several states are also intensifying efforts to enhance protections for children online, especially on social media platforms. Though action isn’t expected until later this spring, staff also continues efforts to update Pennsylvania’s “Stuffed Toy Law” to allow for the use of recycled materials in toys sold in the state.
SGAC members can expect timely updates on these issues, in addition to information on other legislative developments, regulatory changes, and the Association's proactive engagement in advocating for the toy industry. During SGAC meetings, Toy Association staff addresses each issue at various stages of the legislative process – starting from the introduction of a bill, progressing through its implementation, and concluding with reassessment or the development of additional laws based on existing ones. This comprehensive approach ensures that members are well-informed throughout every step of the process.
The SGAC has bi-monthly calls, with the next meeting taking place Monday, February 12 at 1 p.m. (Eastern). Contact Erin Raden, senior director of state government affairs, to join the SGAC or for more information on The Toy Association’s state advocacy initiatives.
