The Toy Association Statement on Play and Healthy Lifestyles

The Toy Association and its members are proud of the important, life-shaping role that toys, games, and play have in the development and growth of children. With the rise in childhood obesity rates sparking public health concerns, parents are rallying alongside medical professionals to encourage more active play – that which stimulates the body by encouraging kids to run, jump, and stretch.

Experts agree that setting the tempo for active play at an early age is a key factor in engaging young children in a lifetime of physical activity, which is essential for happier and healthier lives. The term “active play” can also be applied to activities that foster “active minds” – such as imaginative thinking, strategy, competition, socialization, and discovery. To help raise awareness about the physical, cognitive, social, and emotional benefits of play, The Toy Association spearheads The Genius of Play initiative, which offers families tips and tools for making play an important part of their children’s day.

As the tools of play, toys promote active bodies, active minds, and healthy lifestyles. To ensure the health and safety of children, all toys sold in the U.S. must comply with stringent safety standards. The number one priority of The Toy Association and its members is to protect children at play.
