EPA Bans PIP (3:1) as Toxic Substance

epa-logoMarch 2, 2021 | The Toy Association is alerting members of new actions taken by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to finalize an expedited rule, effective March 8 under the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), prohibiting the processing and distribution of phenol, isopropylated phosphate (PIP (3:1)) (CAS No. 68937-41-7) and PIP (3:1)-containing products.

While a survey of Toy Association members has not disclosed any known uses of the flame-retardant plasticizer, members are encouraged to verify their supply chains do not use the substance. PIP (3:1) may be found in flexible electronic components such as wire insulation.

The rule also prohibits the release of PIP (3:1) to water during manufacturing, processing, and distribution.

Questions regarding the new rule may be directed to Alan Kaufman, senior vice president of technical affairs at The Toy Association.
